UBC Vancouver—Normally, October 15th would be spent like any other Saturday of the year. Instead, students and educators from across Canada will converge on five universities to experience the first-ever Interuniversity Conference on Education, or ICE. The conference aims to change how delegates think about learning, through discussion of current issues surrounding the modern education system and sharing of innovative ideas. By bringing education enthusiasts from across the country together, this event may be the start of an educational revolution.
At UBC, the conference kicks off with a live-streamed presentation of phenomenal speakers representing each of the host universities (UBC, McGill, Waterloo, Quest, and McMaster). A discussion surrounding the presentations will take place concurrently over Twitter, allowing the five universities to interact together in real time. UBC’s streamed speaker is Jackie Stewart, an instructor for the UBC Chemistry Department and a collaborator with Skylight, UBC's Science Center for Learning & Teaching. Following these talks, delegates will have the opportunity to experience a diverse range of workshops designed to challenge and engage delegates, including new methods of teaching to ways to make the most out of university. The event closes at UBC with a closing keynote by Dr. Catherine Rawn, faculty member in the Learning Enhancement area of the UBC Psychology Department.
This conference is a student initiative with the goal of providing delegates with an opportunity to engage in a thought-provoking discussion on education and learning. ICE 2011 will be the start of something big—an event that will set in motion a change in the education system for the better!
